Upturn Funds Caribbean Appoints New Leadership to Drive Emerging Opportunities for the Development of Mining in the Caribbean
Former Minister of Natural Resources and Former Head of Suriname’s State-owned mining company N.V. Grassalco takes up the reigns as Head of Mining at Upturn Funds Caribbean
NEW YORK and BARBADOS, June 27, 2022 – Upturn Funds Caribbean announces that Sergio Akiemboto has been appointed Head of Mining in the Mining Division of Upturn Funds Caribbean, effective July 1. Sergio brings a wealth of experience to this new role and will provide strategic leadership while overseeing the expansion and exploration of the mining sector in the Caribbean. He will be tasked with developing strategic frameworks for the operational development and implementation of the group’s new mining division with strategic focus on Guyana and Suriname.
With a background and MBA in Management, Corporate Strategy and Finance Policy, Sergio comes to Upturn Funds Caribbean from a 16-year distinguished career in the private and public sector having held positions as CEO of the state mining company N.V. Grassalco, and as former Minister of Natural Resources as member of the Parliament of Suriname. Sergio will report directly to Upturn Funds Caribbean’s Co-Founder and Head of Caribbean Region, H. E. Ambassador Dr. Andre Thomas and will work closely with the team to enhance the organizational performance and capability of the division.

Ambassador Dr. Andre Thomas commented, “Sergio has demonstrated leadership at a national and international level in mining and has an MBA in management, corporate strategy, and finance policy. He is one of the leading mining executives in the Caribbean and will bring a wealth of experience to the Mining Division of Upturn Funds Caribbean. His leadership will create innovative financing and development solutions for regional mining.”
On his appointment, Akiemboto noted that his vision is to add value to mining rights within the country, to ensure the optimization and the potential of Suriname and the region is realized. “It is important that the socio-economic benefits accrue to the local people in terms of job opportunities and business spinoff,” stated Akiemboto. “I am looking forward to strengthening the capacity of the local institute and the transfer of knowledge that will help with the development of young people, and to be able to move the nation of Suriname forward,” he added.
Akiemboto will be joining the list of panelists at the Upturn Funds Caribbean Investment Summit 2022 in Barbados during the Mining session on Day 2 of the August 25 – 27 event at the Hilton Barbados Resort. The session will discuss the emerging opportunities for the development of mining Projects in Guyana and Suriname.
